 Volunteers in Mission

Volunteers in Mission (VIM) was established by the United Methodist church in the United States  to promote, encourage, and enable Christians to exemplify “Christian Love In Action” through short-term mission service in the United States and abroad. Forthspring was delighted to host this year’s VIM group. They were a fantastic group who in a few days built a 40 foot deck to enhance the garden project and inspired us with their enthusiasm, energy, commitment and sense of fun. To find out more about their visit you can go to their blog which has photos and very interesting account of their trip.

 Community Festival

Thanks to funding from Belfast City Council we will be organising our own festival during the summer. The festival will be for all ages and will be held over 2 days and 2 evenings on 27th and 28th July. A detailed programme will be available from the beginning of July

 ‘Paperboy’ Launch

We had a great evening in early May with the launch of Tony Macaulay’s new book, Paperboy, a memoire of a childhood spent growing up in the Woodvale and Shankill area. The book gives a real flavour of life in a working class Protestant community, and captures the spirit of Belfast in the 80’s.  It’s a great read and is available from all good booksellers (and Amazon). Jackie Redpath, from the Greater Shankill Partnership, drew on his own extensive experience of the Shankill to conduct a very entertaining interview with Tony, who also read extracts from the book.  Thanks to the congregation for the use of the church which was a wonderfully appropriate venue for the event.

 Youth Club

The Junior Group are working on a puppet making project during May and June which will culminate with the group taking part in the Belfast City Carnival parade on Saturday 19th June. The Youth Diversionary Team continues to carry out outreach work with young people not in youth clubs and is currently busy in the mid Shankill area.

 Mens Group

The Men’s group have just completed a photography course with the WEA’s Man Matters programme. Photographs taken by the group will be exhibited during the festival in July. The allotment is coming along with the vegetable patch prepared and seeds now ready to be planted out. We have to thank Colette for plants and seeds - as well as looking after Forthspring’s finances Collette has taken a great interest in the garden and allotment.

 NIHE

We are working in partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s Community Cohesion Team to further develop Forthspring as a ‘Shared Space for All’.  Shortly the project will be conducting a community audit of the area that Forthspring works in both to identify local need and to assess the relevance of the services provided by Forthspring.
